Family gathering on a sunny patio overlooking the Norwegian countryside

What Norway Reminded Me About Home

A Koselig Life

A few weeks ago, I did something I haven’t done in a long time—I truly stepped away from work.

I spent time in Norway, the country where half of my family comes from. I visited relatives, slowed down, and experienced a way of life that reminded me of something I think many of us are missing.

The Norwegian Art of Koselig

The Norwegians have a word, koselig (pronounced koosh-lee). It’s one of those words that’s difficult to translate because it means more than just “cozy.”

Koselig is about creating warmth. It’s sharing a meal with people you love. It’s lighting a candle on a rainy evening. It’s slowing down long enough to enjoy your home instead of simply passing through it. It’s feeling safe, peaceful, and connected.

As I walked through homes, cafés, and neighborhoods in Norway, I realized something.

The houses themselves weren’t necessarily bigger or fancier than ours. They weren’t perfect. But they were intentionally cared for. They invited people to gather. They felt lived in—and loved.

Why I Started Your Happy House Cleaner

That reminded me why I started Your Happy House Cleaner almost ten years ago.

When I first started this business, it wasn’t because I was passionate about mopping floors or scrubbing bathrooms. It was because I believed that a peaceful home changes the people who live there.

Growing up, my dad taught me that hard work matters, but so do the people you’re working for. He inspired me to build a business that serves families, not just houses.

Every home we clean belongs to someone with a story—a busy mom trying to balance work and family, grandparents welcoming their grandchildren, a couple preparing for a new baby, or someone simply trying to catch their breath after a long week.

A Clean Home Isn’t About Perfection

A clean home isn’t about perfection.

It’s about creating space for what matters most.

For family dinners.

For board games on the living room floor.

For quiet mornings with a cup of coffee.

For welcoming friends without feeling embarrassed.

For resting after a hard day.

Years ago, I actually began this business using Norwex products. At the time, I didn’t even realize that the name “Norwex” came from “Norwegian Experience.” Looking back now, it feels like a fitting place to have started.

I’ve always believed that caring for our homes should also mean caring for the people who live in them.

The Heart Behind What We Do

This trip reminded me that while systems, schedules, and checklists are important, they aren’t the heart of what we do.

People are.

As we approach ten years in business, I’m more grateful than ever for the families who have trusted us with their homes. Thank you for allowing us to be a small part of your lives. It is a privilege we never take for granted.

My hope is that every time we leave your home, we’ve done more than clean it.

I hope we’ve helped create a little more peace.

A little more breathing room.

A little more koselig.

Because at the end of the day, that’s what home is really about.
